It’s a road trip: Go west young man (and women)!

by D. Brent Miller

My mom needs to get back to Phoenix. We haven’t seen our son for six months, who now lives in Utah. And, It’s been a year since we’ve seen Lin’s sister and family in Albuquerque. This scenario has all the makings of a road trip.

We’re setting out early Saturday morning–the fall equinox. And, like all good road trips, the one’s that should be memorable. I’ll be posting about the travels. Perhaps we’ll stumble onto some meaningful travel here. Secondly, we’re going to produce our stories in a variety of mediums. Stay tuned.–DBrent

DBrent.com undergoing web site changes

by D. Brent Miller

Just a note: Many of you subscribe to the RSS feed of this site and my photography site, DBrent.com, which is undergoing an overhaul. The new format is up and running, and new content is being created that will better facilitate the photography business and fine art sales. There is a link to the new DBrent Studio News with all the old content, but it has been moved and re-formatted.

If you wish to continue the subscription, you will have to visit DBrent.com/news and re-subscribe. I think you will like the changes that are coming, and will enjoy how these two companion sites are going to work together.–DBrent

There is Hope: Here’s an example

by D. Brent Miller

As I watched the sun rise this morning, and embraced the peaceful setting, I wondered if our planet will ever see peace. Will hatred become a thing of the past. Will people stop abusing and killing each other. Will we see an end to war. Will world citizens learn tolerance and live in harmony. Will we ever learn to forgive.

Sunrise on the neighborhood

Then I returned to my computer to check the morning e-mail. It was a simple, two-sentence paragraph from the “News in Brief” of the headline e-mail edition of today’s Christian Science Monitor:

USA
The Amish community in Pennsylvania that lost five girls last year in a schoolhouse massacre said Wednesday it will make an unspecified contribution to the gunman’s widow and her three children. A statement released on behalf of the community underlined its determination to forgive and “not to become a hostage to hostility.”

What a splendid act of forgiveness and care for the innocent family of someone who caused so much pain.

Apologies, and Thanks for the Help

by D. Brent Miller

Several readers have commented that the web site appears to be dysfunctional with the formatting, and I have spent a couple of hours trying to diagnose and tweak the formatting. Obviously, the web site looks different on different computer screens and different browsers. So, getting it to the lowest common denominator has been a task.

Here’s what I’ve done. I’ve changed the format to a two-column look and narrowed the layout. There’s been a couple of other little changes, too, that might impact the appearance. It might be time to look for a different template for the layout.

If this looks okay on your screen. Good. If not, send me an e-mail or post a comment. From the beginning of this site, comments must be approved, and will be before being posted to the site. If you send a comment through the site form, and don’t want it posted, just say so.

On the motorcycling-travel-photography-writing front, it rained last night and looks like it will for a little today. I’ll have to find something else to write about!–DBrent

Coffee House Discovery in Milford, Ohio

by D. Brent Miller

“A mug of coffee and a muffin, please.”

“Small or large? Light, medium, dark or decaf?”

“Let’s go with a large dark.”

“What kind of muffin?”

“They all look good. What’s your favorite?”

She pulls out a blueberry muffin and slides a large mug of dark coffee towards me. That’s my first encounter at The Main Cup Coffee House at 126 Main Street in Milford, Ohio. And, it’s going to get better.

I try a new route to Milford, looking for something a little more direct, but still on back roads. Eventually, the road will widen to more than two lanes, but the goal is to ride on as many two-lane roads as possible. Trail-junction-map courtesy Trail Festival

The number one reason to go to Milford on this particular day is to take a look at the 2nd Annual Junction of the Trails Festival. If you are into long distance hiking or bicycling, you probably know about Milford. Several major trails meet in Milford–the Little Miami River Scenic Trail, the Buckeye Trail, the North Country Trail, American Discovery Trail, Ohio to Erie Cycling Trail, Underground Railroad Cycling Route, and the Sea to Sea Trail.

Imagine, there are plenty of crossroads all across America, but here in Milford, Ohio, in this little historic town on the banks of the Little Miami River, is the junction of all these important hiking and bicycling trails!

It’s too early in the morning for the festival activities, so I find my way around the block onto Main Street to get a cup of coffee, and find a parking spot immediately in front of The Main Cup.

The Main Cup Coffee House, Milford, Ohio

With coffee and muffin in hand, I park at a table just inside the door, and dig in. The coffee is delicious. In fact deliciously fresh. Steve Jeray, owner of The Main Cup Coffee House That’s when I notice him, the man in the corner working at some kind of contraption. So I ask, “Is that a coffee roaster?” “Yes,” he replies, and that’s how I met Steve Jeray, owner and proprietor of the Main Cup Coffee House. He advertises “We roast our beans right here!” And, that’s the truth. I’m watching Steve roast the next batch of Columbian Supremo Vienna Roast–his special blend. It smells delicious.

Some people really do follow their dreams. Steve and Becky have followed theirs to Milford. Steve has been roasting coffee for 17 years. Originally from Mundelein, Illinois, north of Chicago, he came to Milford about a year ago to find a place to open his own shop. He found it at 126 Main Street in Milford.

The place is abuzz with customers, and quite a few are very curious about the coffee roaster right on the premises. I have to admit, I’ve never seen that before. And the aroma …. Aaaahhhhhh! That’s a good cup of coffee. And fresh too!

If you ever find yourself crossing trails or riding down the highway near Milford, you might want to take a coffee break. You’ll be glad you did.–DBrent
