NPPA Convention focuses on new media

The 2008 National Press Photographer Association national convention, “Convergence 2008,” focused on what else? New Media. Newspapers are broadcasting online. TV stations are producing print online. Radio stations are producing audio slideshows. It seems all of the world’s media is converging on new media.

Journalists can no longer distinguish themselves as print, or broadcast, or radio. We all carry digital recorders, reporter’s notebooks, a camera, and sometimes a video camera. Speakers presented ideas and bodies of work. Students of the Multimedia Immersion course learned how to produce multimedia stories.

You can read more about the convention at NPPA.org.

Journalists are trying to learn how to report the news in a new medium while earning a living. Meanwhile, newspapers are reducing staff while looking for journalists who are skilled in online reporting. It’s a new world out there.

2008 International Motorcycle Show in Cleveland

In the winter, motorcycle rides become fewer. A nice day may come along, and you can get the bike out–the number one reason I never winterize my bike.

Winter also means … the International Motorcycle Shows make the circuit. This weekend, I went to Cleveland. Here’s my slide show commentary.–DBrent

Multi-media: Wind on Zoar Road

I’m fascinated with combining still photography with sound, but I haven’t done nearly enough of it. You have probably seen some of my past productions. They are all in the category “Multi-Media.” This time, I wanted to do something with nature. I am inspired by those closing shots on CBS Sunday Morning and Charles Osgood says, “We leave you this morning in ….”

Well, I leave you this morning on Zoar Road, southwest of South Lebanon, OH.–DBrent

Ohio River Paddlefest 2007

by D. Brent Miller

The organizers and participants of 2007 Paddlefest on the Ohio River couldn’t have asked for better weather. Hot and sunny make a great mix for putting in the canoe or kayak, and that’s what about 1,500 did on Saturday morning.

Some came with their own boats and equipment, and many came hoping to grab one of the many rentals available. Slowly, they made their way into the Four Seasons Marina, unloaded and ventured down the boat launch to enter the Ohio River system. There, at the mouth of the marina to the river, hundreds of paddlers waited for the start of the “2,000 Paddles” float trip to downtown Cincinnati, about 8 miles away.–DBrent

Brent and Lin go to HOMEARAMA 2007

by D. Brent Miller

Every now and then, I’m going to throw something up on the web site that might be a little more entertaining. So, here for your viewing and listening entertainment is our travel to the Home Builders Association of Greater Cincinnati’s HOMEARAMA 2007. This year’s event is presented in The Vintage Club, a new luxury development in Montgomery, Ohio. The average price of the homes are about $1.9 million … give or take a hundred thousand. Enjoy!–DBrent
