My friend Carla King said, “Brent, you should do another review on the V-Strom, one that better addresses commuting and touring. You could do a review at 5,000 and 10,000 miles.”
“Well, Carla,” I said, “let me just do another for 5,000. That ought to be enough V-Strom review for anybody.”
When Carla suggested the second review, I was at 5,000 miles. By the time I’ve gotten around to getting it done, I’ve put another 1,000 on it. So, here is my review of the “next 5,000 miles.” I’ve taken a good look at how I use this bike for commuting, errand running, group rides, and taking the bike on tour.

It’s a little rainy, today. So I thought I would put together a report–my observations and experience with the V-Strom DL650–my new motorcycle.

Recently, I went to the Cleveland motorcycle show, and produced an audio slideshow of that visit. You can read and view it a few posts below. The objective was to look at everything the manufacturers were offering, and walk through motorcycle heaven. My main mission, though, was to look at only two motorcycles and compare–a newcomer (which turns out isn’t coming to the USA for another 8-9 months), and the lead contender.
For the past year or so, I have put images of motorcycles on my computer desktop, something to study as the laptop boots up. I have inserted a number of different motorcycles in different colors in that precious piece of computer real estate just to get a feel for my daydreams and wanderlust. The photo below has been teasing me on my desktop since the Cleveland show–that is, until two days ago.–DBrent
